Hello! :) My name is Ana and I'm from Portugal. I'm biologist and at the moment I'm doing a PhD in cancer research in Cardiff, UK.
In the end of 2014 I was diagnosed with coeliac disease. I must say that my diagnosis was quite "quick" and "simple".
In the end of 2014 I was diagnosed with coeliac disease. I must say that my diagnosis was quite "quick" and "simple".
In April 2014 the gastrointestinal symptoms started, but looking a bit behind, I can say that I had already other symptoms that, maybe because the lack of knowledge or because they weren't that "specific", masked a little bit the disease and were responsible for a later diagnosis.
Only when the gastrointestinal symptoms started, constantly, I noticed that something was wrong. During that time I changed a bit my diet in order to avoid fried food, sweets, etc. But something remained...(just to let you know, my region - Alentejo - has one of the best breads in Portugal, how could I avoid that?!)...bread, cereals, cookies... ok! As I've told before, something was wrong! I don't know how that happened, but on that time I had the thought "Alright Ana, it's likely that you are intolerant to gluten, JUST that..."
I shared my opinion to my GP and she told me to do the blood tests straight away. And surprise, surprise! It wasn't JUST an intolerance, it was really Coeliac Disease!!
After that the diagnosis was confirmed by endoscopy. And that's it, gluten free diet forever!
During the last few months the symptoms got much better and the diet became more natural.

This blog, apart from working as a guide to those who are in the same situation or know anyone in the same situation, it's also a guide to myself. A way to learn more and more and to make this "thing" of the gluten free diet more simple and delicious!
Hope you enjoy!!
Ana :)
